This summer marks a milestone for one of Bali SBK’s longest-serving academy players: Manu was selected to travel to the United States for an invited trial with MLS NEXT Pro club San Jose Earthquakes, Head Coach Brandon McDonald’s former club. This is the chance of a lifetime and not the kind of opportunity that happens by accident.
It’s the result of years of daily training, individual development coaching, mental performance work, and a commitment to doing the work even when the reward feels far away.
During his time in San Jose, Manu has now had the chance to train alongside professional-level players and gain visibility to collegiate coaches from universities including nearby Stanford, UC Berkeley, Saint Mary’s, and USF. College coaches scout these environments actively.
This is how pathways open.
Three Pathways, One System
Manu’s opportunity represents one of three development destinations at Bali SBK:
MLS & MLS NEXT Pro — professional trials and reserve team pathways
US College Scholarship — NCAA Division I, II, III opportunities through Laurel Springs (NCAA-recognised academics)
European / Bundesliga Academies — meeting the standards of German youth development
The training is the same for all three pathways, but the outcome depends, of course, on commitment, both from players and their families. “We believe if a player commits to a minimum of 3 years in the full program, we can confidently say they are ready for the next level,” says Coach Brandon.
