Preparing for an MLS Trial: One Player’s Journey from Bali SBK to San Jose

  • September 22, 2026

How a Trial Opportunity Comes to Life

When a young player earns an invitation to trial with a professional academy, there are months of dedicated work and a lot of support behind it. This is the story of what that work actually looks like at Bali SBK.

In June 2026, Manu, one of Bali SBK’s junior athletes, travelled to San Jose for an invited trial with an MLS NEXT Pro club. It’s the kind of opportunity that validates the daily grind for our players. But the trial itself is just one day. Manu’s future hinged on getting it right under enormous pressure, in an unfamiliar environment, so specific preparation was our focus.

What a Trial-Ready Training Week Looks Like

Manu’s preparation was an extension of his existing routine, after all, he’d already gotten the scouts’ attention. Now, his training was intensified, individualised, and relentlessly focused on the attributes the MLS scouts evaluate during tryouts.

Mornings (Monday–Friday): Ball mastery

Every morning, Manu was on the pitch before the main squad session. He used that time for targeted stretching and his individual recovery routine. Coach Brandon’s post-training recovery protocol was already a daily habit, but during the trial-prep phase, Manu extended it.

The main morning sessions focused on:

  • Cone drills and ABCs (Agility, Ball-control, Coordination) as the foundation Coach Brandon swears by.
  • Positional awareness work to help Manu read space, anticipate the next pass, and move off the ball, under pressure.
  • First-touch repetition. Yes, even this close to tryouts, our players keep up their controlled touches under varying pressure and scenarios. You can never forego the basics.

This is where technical instinct gets built. The kind that lets a player execute at speed when a scout is watching, and there’s no time to think, let alone second guess.

Afternoons (Monday–Friday): Tactical and possession-based work

Afternoons shifted to decision-making under pressure:

  • Small-sided games (4-v-4, 5-v-5) forcing quick reads and faster execution.
  • Possession circuits: keeping the ball under defensive pressure, switching the point of attack, recognising when to hold and when to play forward.
  • Formation-specific work aligned to the style Manu would encounter in San Jose.

Our plug-in-play strategy prepares players to integrate seamlessly into unfamiliar team dynamics, which is exactly what a trial environment demands. Walk into a new system, read it quickly, and perform within it.

Weekends: Matches, recovery, reflection

Saturdays meant local matches for competitive game time where Manu could apply what he’d worked on all week. Sundays were for active recovery and review.

The Mental Side of Training

Trials are as much a mental test as a technical one. Players who freeze, overthink, or lose composure under observation don’t get callbacks — regardless of how clean their first touch is.

Manu had an advantage, as he had worked regularly with Bali SBK’s mental health coach on techniques, including box breathing. This controlled breathing technique activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers heart rate, and helps players stay composed when the pressure ramps up. It’s the same technique woven into daily recovery sessions for all Bali SBK players, but during trial prep, it became a deliberate pre-session ritual for Manu.

Recovery: The Invisible Work

Manu’s training load during the prep phase was higher than his normal baseline. That meant recovery, which is highly valued by all our players, became even more essential.

  • Ice baths after every afternoon session.
  • Sauna sessions to support circulation and muscle repair.
  • Yoga for mobility and range of motion.
  • Foam rolling using Coach Brandon’s targeted protocol for the posterior chain (hamstrings and calves) and other techniques.

We believe that our recovery focus at Bali SBK on ice baths, sauna, yoga space, and a dedicated recovery zone allows a young player to sustain a professional-level training load without breaking down. Bundesliga academies, MLS academies, and elite college programs all expect players to arrive with bodies that can handle the demand. Manu did.

Individual Development: Not a Squad Program

This is the part that sets Bali SBK apart from most academies, and it’s worth noting: Manu was not trained as part of a one-size-fits-all squad program. He was coached individually within the squad structure. Like all our development athletes.

His development plan was tailored to:

  • His position and the attributes MLS scouts prioritise for that position.
  • His specific technical gaps (identified through video analysis and coach feedback).
  • His mental profile — what triggers his nerves, what builds his confidence
  • His timeline — working backward from the June trial date.

Every player at Bali SBK gets this level of individual attention. It is part of our methodology.

What This Means for Other Players and Parents

Manu’s trial in San Jose is one example of a possible, accessible pathway at Bali SBK. But the point of sharing his story is that the preparation is what makes opportunities like this possible. The special sauce is in the daily ball mastery, the tactical afternoons, the mental coaching, the recovery, and the individual development plan within the squad environment. We allow young athletes to experience pro-level training (at their developmental stage).

Three pathways, one preparation system. Whether the destination is an MLS trial, a US college scholarship, or a European academy, the foundation is the same: complete players, built daily.
