Understanding Academic Intakes, Training Schedules, and Enrolment

  • July 12, 2026

When Should My Child Start at Bali SBK?

To be honest, the answer depends on what you’re after. Some of our players start very young, others join us as teens to level up, and we also regularly have short stay visitors dropping in for a few weeks to months. Our doors are open and we try to accommodate your child’s needs.

If you are interested in our full academic stream, we also open flexible start dates – but have two main dates for intake.

The Benefit of Flexible Start Dates

We believe that a typical traditional school year intake doesn’t work for families of young athletes, especially international families who may be relocating, transitioning between school systems, or timing a move around a work or sporting opportunity.

Similar to how our methodology offers individualised training within the squad environment, our academic stream is tailored to students who need flexible enrolment and a supportive team environment. Bali SBK’s academic stream runs through a partnership with Laurel Springs School, an accredited online private school (WASC and Cognia accreditation) that offers rolling admissions. As Laurel Springs describes it: “Students don’t have to wait for the fall, the first of the month, or even the start of a new week — coursework can begin immediately after admission” (Laurel Springs, “Flexible School Year”).

As many families’ relocation depends on the school calendar of the system they are coming from, Bali SBK offer two primary intake dates plus our flexible enrolment option. This means a young player can join us at almost any point in the year, in a way that works from a training and academic point of view.

Our development model is built around individual players, rather than having a cohort focus.

Intake Window 1: August — The European & Balinese Calendar

Who this is for: Families coming from European, Indonesian, or international school systems that run August to June.

Most schools in Bali and Indonesia start their academic year in August. Green School Bali begins Term 1 on 12 August 2026. The British School Bali opens on 31 August. ACG School Jakarta starts 11 August. This is the calendar most familiar to families already living in Bali or relocating from Europe.

For Bali SBK’s full-term programme, an August intake means:

  • Training begins alongside the academic term — players start their daily schedule (morning ball mastery, afternoon tactical sessions, weekend matches) from day one.
  • Cambridge exam alignment — the October/November exam series registration closes in early August (source: British Council exam registration), so August-enrolled students targeting IGCSE or A-Level exams can register for the upcoming series or plan for the May/June series the following year.
  • Weather window — August is dry season in Bali, ideal for outdoor training as players settle in.
  • Social integration — joining at the start of a term means arriving alongside other new students, which eases the transition.

What a typical August-start week looks like:

Time Monday–Friday Saturday Sunday
Early morning Targeted stretching, individual recovery, optional early ball work Match day, travel or rest Active recovery
Morning Ball mastery — cone drills, ABCs, positional awareness, first-touch repetition Match or rest Reflection, journaling
Midday Two-hour academic study block (Laurel Springs online coursework) — —
Afternoon Tactical and possession-based sessions — small-sided games, formation work Recovery, social time Preparation for the week ahead
Evening Dinner, free study time, mental skills (breathing, meditation) Team social / free time Early night

Intake Window 2: January–February — The Australian Calendar

Who this is for: Families coming from Australia, New Zealand, or other Southern Hemisphere school systems that run late January to December.

The Australian school year starts in late January. In 2027, Queensland state schools begin Term 1 on Wednesday 27 January, with most other states (NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia) starting in the first week of February (source: Queensland Department of Education, Future School Dates).

For Australian families, this is the natural transition point. A child finishing the Australian school year in December 2026 can start at Bali SBK in late January 2027, aligning their move with the beginning of a new academic year back home, minimising disruption to their school progression.

Why January–February works well for Australian families:

  • No lost semester — your child finishes the Australian school year and starts the next term at Bali SBK without a gap.
  • Weather advantage — January–February is wet season in Bali, which sounds counterintuitive, but training in tropical conditions (heat, humidity, occasional rain) builds physical resilience and heat acclimatisation, giving players a competitive edge.
  • Laurel Springs flexibility — because Laurel Springs runs on rolling admissions with self-paced, asynchronous coursework, an Australian student can transition mid-stream without losing credits or momentum. Their 5-month and 10-month enrolment periods are specifically structured to align with NCAA eligibility requirements (Laurel Springs, NCAA-Approved School).
  • Timing for May/June Cambridge exams — January enrolment gives students a full academic semester to prepare for the May/June IGCSE or A-Level exam series (registration deadline typically mid-February).

Intake Window 3: Any Time It Suits — The Flexible Start

Who this is for: Families whose timeline doesn’t fit neatly into August or January — and frankly, that’s a lot of families.

Most academies’ “intake window” model exists because these programmes run on a cohort structure. Everyone starts together, moves through the curriculum together, and progresses as a group. If you miss the start, you’re behind.

At Bali SBK, each player has their own development plan, targeted to their position, their technical gaps, their mental profile, and their timeline. We approach training as a personalised programme that happens to take place within a squad structure.

Because Laurel Springs offers rolling admissions with self-paced, asynchronous coursework, a student who starts in March or October or June just starts where they are, progresses at their own pace, and builds the same NCAA-approved transcript as a student who started in August.

Flexible Start Vs Regular Intake

Will a flexible start give your child the same experience as joining alongside a group of new starters in August? Not exactly. There’s a social advantage to arriving when others are settling in too. The training and academic integration is just as effective, but the social side takes a bit more intentionality, from the player, from the coaching staff, and from the community. We actively encourage this through partnering them up and offering team-building activities off the pitch, too.

And a flexible start means your child doesn’t lose six months waiting for the “right” window. It means a family dealing with a relocation, a school transition, or a sporting opportunity can act when the timing is right for them. If your child has been stuck in an environment that isn’t developing them, six months of waiting means six months of stalled progress.

Bali SBK’s coaching team has plenty of experience integrating young players mid-cycle. The individual development plan model means we assess where a new player is technically, tactically, physically, and academically, then build from there. They do not need to catch up, as the programme is built for them.

 Plus, Flexible Short Stay Programmes

Short-stay and holiday camp enrolments are open year-round, subject to availability. Players who come for a two-to-eight-week stay train alongside full-term athletes, participate in all daily sessions, and get a genuine sense of whether the programme is the right fit. Several full-term players at Bali SBK started as short-stay visitors,  and they didn’t all arrive in August or January.

It’s Probably Not Too Late

If you’re reading this and wondering whether you’ve missed the window, if your teen is over 13, the answer is almost certainly no. The rolling admissions model means there isn’t one narrow door that closes. What matters is starting as early as makes sense for your child’s development and fully committing to the process once you do.

The families who benefit most from Bali SBK are the ones who treat it as a multi-year development plan. It is not a short-term fix, even if we can help develop young players greater skills and give them exposure during short stays, too. Whether your child starts in August, January, or next month is less important than that they do start as soon as possible.

What Your Child Actually Needs to Start

The practical requirements are straightforward:

  1. A conversation with the coaching team — we need to understand your child’s age, playing level, academic standing, and goals before recommending a programme
  2. Laurel Springs enrolment — handled through Bali SBK, with an admissions coordinator guiding course selection and placement
  3. Passport and visa — Bali SBK assists families with the visa process
  4. Medical clearance — standard sports medical clearance from your family doctor
  5. Kit and equipment — training gear is provided; personal boots and shin guards are brought from home
